The Root of the Problem

Research Papers
2022

A four-part written investigation into the environmental, social, and economic frameworks of regenerative forestry; exploring the evolving relationship between people, forests, and materials.

The Root of the Problem proposes an alternative economic model for forestry that balances ecological systems with material production.

Rooted Landscapes, Research Papers

The Rooted Landscapes Research Papers form a four-part written investigation into the ecological, cultural, and material systems shaping the future of British woodlands. Each essay explores the evolving relationship between people, forests, and materials, inviting a more caring and regenerative approach to how we design, make, and live with woodlands. Together, the papers bring research and reflection into dialogue, proposing new pathways for sustainable woodland management, regenerative forestry, and circular timber production. Developed in collaboration with contributors from Evolving Forest, Longleat Estate, Woodland Trust, Vastern Timber, Material Cultures, and Central Saint Martins, the series combines dialogue, research, and reflection to imagine more balanced and resilient futures for British woodlands.

Volume 1, The Value of Non-Human Life
Explores the forest as a sentient landscape and questions how human-nature relationships can guide more soulful and reciprocal approaches to land stewardship.

Volume 2, The Root of the Problem
Proposes an alternative economic model for forestry that balances ecological systems with material production, extracting only at a rate the land can sustain.

Volume 3, Woodland Reform
Celebrates the people protecting and managing our forests through a series of interviews, highlighting the value of care, innovation, and collaboration across the timber industry.

Volume 4, Forest Guarantee
Expands on the regenerative woodland management model developed for Rooted Landscapes, outlining a long-term vision for afforestation and circular timber supply.
